A first century silver Roman denarius of Domitain (AD 81-96)

A first century silver Roman denarius of Domitain (AD 81-96). The reverse of the coin shows Minerva holding a thunderbolt and spear with a shield at her feet.

Minerva was Domitian's favourite diety, she was goddess of wisdom, medicine, the arts and trade but also war. She teamed up with the Celtic god sulis at the important shrine of Aquae Sulis (Bath) and became Sulis Minerva, that's how tolerant the Romans were of other religions - apart from Christianity in the early days.
